A Spark to a Life Reimagined
We first connected with Molly in 2008, when she came to OAS looking to ski. What none of us expected was how that experience would ignite something much greater — a spark that would completely reshape the course of Molly’s life.
What began as a single ski day evolved into something far more powerful: an active lifestyle rooted in the heart of Central Oregon, supported by a thriving and inclusive community.
We’re excited to share Molly’s journey—because you deserve to see the spark you helped light!
One of the most impactful experiences I had with OAS was the Turns and Berms program in 2023, a spring partnership with the Kelly Brush Foundation that combines skiing in the morning and mountain biking in the afternoon. It’s one of the most thoughtfully built, immersive, and energizing experiences I’ve ever had. That experience changed something inside me. It gave me a community and a spark that stuck with me long after the snow melted. That spark ultimately inspired me to move to Bend this past August. I began teaching at OSU-Cascades that fall and skied almost weekly with OAS.

Before my injury, I was a high-level athlete; a snowboarder, soccer player, member of a K9 wilderness search and rescue team, and generally a dirt-lover. When I was injured, I deeply grieved the loss of those identities. What I didn’t know was that OAS lay ahead – now, I’m a skier, mountain biker, kayaker, and trail lover – and so is my dog! If you’d asked me in the past, I’d have told you I had a strong preference for skiing. That was before I tried an adaptive mountain bike. I instantly thought, I love this. I didn’t hesitate for a second; I quickly fundraised and acquired my very own adaptive mountain bike.
For me, riding is not just about access, it’s about acceptance. It’s about getting seen and being visible out on the trails. With OAS programs, you don’t have to think about every little step it takes to get from A to Z. They take the stress out of the logistics, allowing me to be present and focus on having fun and crushing rocks. Behind the scenes, there’s so much heart: the volunteers skiing above you, the tech crew getting your gear dialed, the team setting up equipment before the sun rises, and the crew transporting everything— it’s an incredible system of support. I cannot express how grateful I am. That support, that heart, doesn’t go unnoticed. You can truly feel that energy; it’s impossible to ignore.
I was injured ages ago, but only got on an adaptive mountain bike a few years ago. I still don’t have my own ski. The hard truth is that adaptive sports are expensive, living in Bend is expensive, and having a disability is expensive. The scholarship I received from OAS made it possible for me to get out there, not just once, but again and again. That scholarship has made all the difference – it’s opened the door to progression, more dirt, and to a deeper sense of belonging. I skied over 10 days this season, and my skills progressed dramatically. It’s a night-and-day difference compared to the three days I might have managed otherwise.
Here’s what matters most: OAS scholarship funding exists because of you.
Your support powers Access Elevated—OAS’s bold commitment to grow programs by 20% each year, reaching even more athletes like me. You’re creating opportunities for belonging, connection, and adventure—in the snow, on the water, and across the dirt.
A donation of $25 could ignite someone’s OAS journey. Will you be the spark by donating today?
